With the new default Mono icon theme, the icon for a wired connection is
now completely different. Ironically, the new icon suffers from the same
problem: it's ugly and confusing. But that is more specifically covered
by bug 532522.

So, I'm narrowing this bug report to cover just the problem of showing
the wired connection icon when it isn't interesting, because the PC is
always wired.

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: network-manager
-
- I always have the same static icon in my notification area (please see
- the screenshot). It looks like RJ45 jack in isometric projection,
- uncentered and with huge blurry shadow under it. It looks really ugly
- between other icons. And it also violates GNOME HIG (at least 9.1.1
- Icons Perspective). I use Tango icon theme, but I'm not sure this icon
- is of Tango collection.
-
- But here is another question: why should I always have this ugly icon in
- my notification area? Does it notify me I am connected by wire? Well,
- I'm always connected with wire, so I know it. Actually, there is no
- other way to connect my computer, so this "notification" doesn't notify
- me. Some people could also think that the cable is unplugged as is
- doesn't look like it is in the socket (see
- https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=577281).
+ Why should I always have the wired connection icon visible? Does it
+ notify me I am connected by wire? Well, I'm always connected with wire,
+ so I know it. Actually, there is no other way to connect my computer, so
+ this "notification" doesn't notify me.

I understand that someone will see WiFi signal strength or BT modem
connected or something more exotic instead of this unplugged jack. But
for wired people to be connected is like a default state. They don't
need to be notified about that. No new information — no notification
icon. Having stable wired connection also means generally you need
nothing to change. So user doesn't need a "shortcut" icon on the taskbar
to change his connection settings every 10 minutes. And if he does, he
could put some applet manually. No I 'm unable even to get rid of this
icon manually. I have to patiate it, which frustrates me a lot.

** Summary changed:

- NM notification icon is ugly and confusing
+ Wired connection icon is useless if you always use wired connection

** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu)
