Here's a new twist... I had previously been unable to properly play ANY video 
file of any type (including the attached example) using both versions of 
mplayer you mention... so this issue did exist in the previous version as well.
Replacing the ubuntu mplayer package with mplayer dev-SVN-r22974-4.1.2 had 
fixed this.

Just now, I did a "sudo apt-get install --reinstall mplayer" and the
current version (ubuntu9.1) now CAN play all video files. Slightly issue
in that the key bindings are not working (can't close mplayer window,
have to kill it)... but is does play the video files normally now.
