Andrew, I changed to 0 in drivers/usb/host/ehci-hcd.c and built my kernel, 2.6.20.3.
Haven't had time to do a lot of testing yet. However it was working the few hours I tested it. I moved a lot of data back and forth and also let it rest for +30 min before going again.
