** Description changed:

  My webcam was working well in previous releases of Ubuntu. It also worked 
well after installation of 12.04 and I could use it with skype for video chats, 
but It doesn't work after I installed VLC.  When I open skype options to test 
the camera, the camera is recognized but when I click "test" all I get is a 
blank screen.
  I tried uninstalling vlc from my system but the problem persists.

+ when I tried the following: 
+ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
+ I got: 
+ libv4l2: error setting pixformat: Device or resource busy
