Curiously, with the Nvidia GT520 installed, repeated invocations of NJC's (post #10) sudo sh -c "sync; echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace; pm-suspend" from a command shell window (Ctrl-Alt-T) in LXDE result in the fans being stopped during suspend and the system reproducibly resuming without issue, albeit only 10+ seconds after Wake Up has been pressed.
