I have the same issue as described by previous posters, in fact I use the same work-around as marc-heinz. This bug must have come from a long negligence since it truly is as old as Unity itself. It occured to me when using 11.04 (clean install), 11.10 (both clean and upgrade) and 12.04 (clean install). It's hard to provide a log of some kind since this is more of a GUI defect.
