Update: For me, a working - but rather dirty workaround - is to disable "save session on logout" in XFCE's settings manager (and then on the logout dialog as well!).
Unless you really need that session-save feature, just make sure, that the currently saved session includes your window manager and press "save session" once so the window manager is restarted on login.
