It seems the the current version in lp:me-tv/1.3 (1.3.8) solves the issue with the stalled GUI. It works for me since two days without --disable-epg-thread. I have successful build it with the instructions from https://answers.launchpad.net/me-tv/+faq/352 using bzr branche lp:me-tv/1.3
