I want to confirm that the kernel in comment #38 solved the almost daily lock ups for me too (sorry to "me too").
The linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic kernel in the precise-proposed software source did NOT fix it. For anyone looking for a solution and needing to work right now: 1. The problem is frequent complete system freezes with Ivy Bridge (see the output of "lspci" to confirm Ivy Bridge) 2.
