Some more info. The bug I experienced was definitely the sliding window bug. This was definitely and immediately fixed by an update. I subscribe to the proposed update channel so I got the fix early. Since then it has never crashed using Java 6. Prior to the update, it crashed during startup anytime azureus was terminated abruptly (like when it gobbles so much memory that it hangs the whole computer ;) )
Since downloading the patch, the problem has not recurred.
