Exactly the same problem here. Behavior is determined in boot time:
-if headphones plugged in at boot, sound only in headphones until next reboot.
-if headphones not plugged in at boot, sound in both speakers and headphones 
until next boot.

In 11.10 the behavior was correct, speakers would turn off as soon as
headphones were plugged in.

My computer is an Acer Aspire 5920 laptop
