In addition to the suggestion in #328, I also disabled java script in FF 13. 
Edit- Preferences- Content. I always have done a similar tweak with windows & I 
did it in Ubuntu just out of habit. No freezes under moderate usage for almost 
2 weeks now! 
I doubt this matters but I created 4 partitions when I last did my last  fresh 
install - boot - swap- 2 file system.  Then the kernel roll back. 
(I had been using 2 partitions with the "standard PAE kernel" ) and had many 
freezes. 
Thanks Stehem, I am about to dual boot win 7 and 12.04 on a modern 64 bit  
system, your tip will come in handy! =)
