Here is how the .goutputstream files generated in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It seems that these files are produced, because you use the desktop environment or may be due to applications that run along with when you use desktop environment.
Follow the steps and you can reproduce the error. Using the desktop terminal: Desktop terminal can be accessed from the keyboard by typing Ctrl-Alt-F7 Using the CLI terminal: Command line terminal can be accessed from the keyboard by typing Ctrl-Alt-F1 1. Using the desktop terminal: a) Use this shell command: ls -ltra | grep "goutput" b) Note down the timestamp of the latest goutputstream file (That should be your bottom most file on the screen) c) Note down the timestamp of the computer d) shutdown and reboot, or restart the system e) Login f) Use this shell command: ls -ltra | grep "goutput" g) You should now see goutputstream file having the timestamp as like in step (b) 2. Using the CLI terminal: a) If you are using the desktop terminal, then you must logout from here. (To do this - simply press "logout" option available on the right top corner of system pane) b) Using your keyboard - Type in Ctrl-Alt-F1 c) Login with your user account d) Use this shell command: ls -ltra | grep "goutput" e) Note down the timestamp of the latest goutputstream file (That should be your bottom most file on the screen) f) Note down the timestamp of the computer (Just type in "date" on the screen to get the timestamp) h) either shutdown (type in "sudo shutdown -h now" -- you will be asked for a root password - so you should be a root user to operate on this command) and reboot (press the power button after the system was turned off), or restart the system (type in "sudo shutdown -rv now" -- you will be asked for a root password - so you should be a root user to operate on this command) i) Using your keyboard, type in Ctrl-Alt-F1 j) Use this shell command: ls -ltra | grep "goutput" k) Note down the timestamp of the latest goutputstream file (That should be your bottom most file on the screen) l) Now you should observe that there is no goutputstream file.
