BTW, this is pretty serious, as it has led to file system corruption on
both machines, since I'd had to shut down via the power button. It led
to my laptop being completely unbootable (to the extent that I had to
reinstall) and my desktop dropped a partition from ext3 to ext2, as the
journal was corrupted, and some files were lost.
