Tom, yes, it's going from gconf.

./.gconf/desktop/gnome/interface/%gconf.xml
./.themes/CleanBlue/index.theme
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ 

Sebastian probably meant that it's root's gconf.
So then gtk should learn x session owner (I guess the X server can give such 
information?) and 
read his gconf setting with the theme name and path.
