I began seeing some error messages while using the patches recommended by cgonzalez. I've since resorted to downgrading to Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (Kernel: 2.6.32-41-generic x86_64 (64 bit)). Everything works as designed. No issues whatsoever. Gentoo 's 12.1 live dvd (kernel 3.3.0)and knoppix live dvd 7.0.1 (kernel 3.3.7)both suffer from this same backlight bug as well.
