Okay, so it's been awhile since I've posted this and I still have neither found an answer nor received any suggestions or questions.
If any devs are listening, know that I've been battling X in some form for over 11 years now and know my way around it fairly well. I'm more than willing to provide more information, test patches, and in general try some rudimentary debugging. I just need *some* guidance since I'm not a software developer myself, just a lowly admin. I love Ubuntu, but this is quite a showstopper.
