Sorry Chris,

I tried a couple of other boot disks and found a distro that didn't present
the problem and that was a bit closer to my Slackware roots. Archlinux. The
problem went away immediately and has not returned.

My apologies for my impatience, but this was my primary workstation at home
and I needed to update several pieces of software to support my work.

I can run some exports so that you can have a comparison, or if you think a
live bootdisk would show the same issue (it didn't before). The problem was
either with the rt2500pci wireless driver or the nvidia driver...
