No, there was no Nautilus crash. As for disabling icons, after a reboot, the icons re-appeared, so apparently it was not me who disabled anything. Additional interesting fact, that I possibly missed, is that it was not possible to select an area on the desktop (you know, press left mouse key and draw a rectangle - nothing happened).
