It didn't give anything useful either (because pkexec is no longer setuid root
when it's straced). But I want to check. Give me the output of
"ls -al /usr/bin/pkexec".

Then you should try the following commands:

sudo dropbox --http-proxy http://127.0.0.1:8080 update
sudo dropbox update

If neither works, please send me the strace of the latter.
