I also can confirm that the keyboard backlight turns absolutely off in
Ubuntu 12.04 if very bright light hits the ambient light sensor
directly.

Tomasz Chmielewski (mangoo-wpkg) found out that the keyboard brightness
can customized manually by change the value (1 - 8) in

/sys/devices/platform/samsung/leds/samsung\:\:kbd_backlight/brightness
