My 'unplug the computer' trick seems to work consistently.

However, it's really annoying that when an incomplete shutdown occurs
(e.g. I need to force power off the machine, or the Ubuntu shutdown
process hangs, which it unfortunately seems to very often on my HTPC), I
usually get this error message.

My feeling is that the firmware upload should be completed when the card
is used for the first time. I'm not entirely sure how the firmware
upload routines with in Ubuntu, but relying on the state of the PCI card
does not seem the best way forward.

I thus believe this is a bug. Possibly PCI card related, but a
workaround should be implemented.
