I now know that this is a graphics driver bug (there is a tiny
possibility that i could be caused by damaged/faulty video hardware, but
I doubt it). It will need a fix by the upstream developers, most likely
in the linux kernel or possibly in the xserver-xorg-video-ati package.
Unfortunately I have noticed that very little development is done
anymore on the drivers for the Mobility Radeon 7000 and similar cards,
probably because they are so old.

** Package changed: firefox (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu)
