IMO, this would be a bad thing to enable on a parents' machine. Security updates can already automatically happen, but it would be bad if a regression happened in a package they used (firefox, libre office, etc) that caused the program to stop functioning completely. As those things aren't security related it seems that not having that enabled would be a better solution.
