Public bug reported:

(This is a small usability issue.)

When I use the "Connect to Server" dialog in Nautilus I fill in the
dialog from top down. My FTP server is on a custom port. I now have my
IP addres and custom port filled in.

When I change the drop down from "Public FTP" to "FTP (with login)", as
the server requires log in, the dialog discards my custom port but keeps
my IP address.

This is a frustrting little paper cut that I encounter quite often.

I think the dropdown change should not discard a custom port, if the
user entered one. Another solution could be changing the "type" drop
down to the first line of the dialog.

** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
