Public bug reported:

I did two things
1. Ran update (today. Aug 25)
2. Install Nautilus encrypt/decrypt from the Ubuntu software manager

When I rebooted, the login screen came up (even though I had been set to
automatic login) and my password was accepted, but then I was
immediately returned to the login screen, so, effectively, I could not
log in.

I was able to fix this by using Ctrl-Alt-F1 then deleting the .Xauthority file
in the home folder then sudo apt-get install --reinstall xorg.
I did this based on info I found online. It appears to have resolved the issue
for me.
