Public bug reported: Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit installed on USB external drive: grub2 package updates correctly but the new bootloader version is not written automatically to the external boot drive that keeps the old one, needs to be updated manually every time with grub-update. The os often boots from different machines and has been updated from 9.10 to 10.X/11.X/12.04. The issue started after the 11.04 distro upgrade .
