Same problem, MacBook Pro 8,2.
I tried noacpi, and it makes no difference. I also tried adding the outb
commands to Grub in order to switch from the ATI discrete card to the Intel
integrated one. This resulted in the screen turning on with some garbage
(12.04) or what appears to be a dark maroon background (12.10 Beta1).

I would really like to get the EFI installation. I currently have 12.04
running successfully on this machine, but battery life is abysmal (1.5
hours compared with 7 hours on Mac OSX) and it heats up noticeably. I
saw several reports that this is mainly due to the use of the Radeon
graphics card, for which I have no use.
