Here is a workaround for the problem, taking the problem at a lower
level (and suitable for business environment):

1) install autofs ('sudo apt-get install autofs')
2) also install any tools needed to access your network resources (for example) 
cifs-utils
3) configure autofs (see for example 
http://www.lamolabs.org/blog/6000/one-liner-mounting-a-smbcifs-share-as-an-automount-on-centosfedorarhel/
 )

Then your resource is managed at a low level (kernel / daemon) and the
apps don't need to be aware of it. This will solve the problem for
Thunderbird as well as for any other app that is currently unaware of
GIO (for example Freemind, GanttProject, ...)
