I have experienced this as well - on the latest Gutsy, plugging in an
iPod will display the "Do not disconnect" message, but the iPod won't
appear on the desktop or in rhythmbox. However, if you open Nautilus
and manually mount the iPod, everything appears to work fine. Hence, it
does seem that Ubuntu is recognizing iPods - however, it is not mounting
them by default as it did in the past.

Devs: Is there any recent changes in udev that could cause this? Is it
by design that iPods are no longer mounted by default? If so, could
this be reverted to the previous behavior?

** Changed in: udev (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Confirmed
