You seem to be correct in this. It's not easy for me to get access to the machines during summer holidays but a speculative wakeonlan attempt seems to have worked.
lspci -vv attached shows both video cards. I guess I should have disabled the onboard card in the BIOS (I guess it'll allow that?). Should X somehow figure out which is the primary video card?
