Sorry to spam the comments section: I "solved" it by changing the theme. I had the Faenza-Ambiance iconset activated which is missing some icons (esp. for the indicator-messages and indicator-power). No icons, no display. :-) Just change your theme (in appearance) to something other than you want to use and then back to your favorite theme. This will most likely "fix" this.
