Well, I have the same behaviour and changing the theme did no help (I have trythe default theme, Faenza and Propheticon13. Same thing... the "email icon" appears at login and is funcional for about 10 to 15 seconds. Then it crashes after all my other indicators have loaded. I not know if it is related, but it happends after the Skype indicator and the "everpad" one are launched (they are the 2 last to be launch). If you need more info just ask....
