Here is a little HowTo for conducting the test I requested:

There is a list (OR a package) of small config files in
/usb/share/usb_modeswitch.

Pick the one that matches your stick's ID in *install mode* (e.g. if the mode 
switch fails or if switching is disabled globally in
/etc/usb_modeswitch.conf).

Copy that file to "/etc/usb_modeswitch.d". It will now be preferred over
the one in the default location.

Edit it and add a line:

ReleaseDelay=3000

This will make usb_modeswitch keep the device handle for 3 seconds after 
sending the switching command.
No guarantee, but it's worth a try.

If there is any effect, smaller values could be tested.
