Public bug reported:

After login either a black screen or the wallpaper is displayed for 30
seconds before the desktop arrives. The desktop is functional, but the
menu bar cannot be edited.

I would expect no delay, and the abillity to add items to the menu bar
etc.

Syslog gives the following entries:
Sep 28 11:30:40 U033321 gnome-session[25272]: WARNING: Application
'gnome-settings-daemon.desktop' failed to register before timeout
Sep 28 11:30:40 U033321 gnome-session[25272]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail
whale is dead. Sorry....

This is Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS with gnome-settings-daemon 3.4.2-0ubuntu0.4

I am using Light-dm, with gnome-fallback or unity. The workstation is
joined to a Microsoft AD domain using winbind with idmap_ad backend. The
user homedirectories are stored on an NFS4 server which are mounted from
the fstab.
