I have gathered all the information required for the upstream bug report. I would have sent this to the "suspend to RAM" mailing list (linux...@vger.kernel.org). However, I now found the similar-looking Bug #921321, and in its light it seems possible that the problem is actually in nouveau's backlight setting, and not in linux-pm as such, and so for the time being I did not open the upstream kernel bug report.
