@Joseph: In the context of bug #1055475 I tested the 3.6 rc7 mainline kernel with nvidia-current and the nvidia-experimental (304.48) drivers on Quantal, and the backlight adjustment did not work. This is on a MacBook Pro 5,4, and not the Asus this bug report is about, but I figure it might well be the same problem.
