Hi Max, I'll have to dig out my 1.6 branch before I can take a closer look, but you should know that the version of Wireshark in Precise has not changed since April 12th, 2012, when the current version was uploaded :) Note that that's before Precise was officially released, but after you upgraded to it.
Not only that - the version in Oneiric is the same major release (1.6) as the version in Precise, so this bug almost certainly existed in Oneiric too! You can find a list of which Wireshark is in which Ubuntu at: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wireshark You mention FIFOs briefly in your summary, but not in your steps to reproduce. If something about reproducing the bug seems reliant on capturing from a FIFO, please clarify.
