I saw this bug yesterday on an updated quantal system running on a Acer 1810tz laptop. I opened the gnome-control-center and selected the sound settings, then I could not see any hdmi output. This used to work in oneiric with the same laptop.
I however managed to play the audio through hdmi by using VLC and selecting the HDMI output device directly from there.
