There may have been a problem internally. Last night I went to view a
dvd. It would not work with any of the programs I have, so I installed
Xine. It still did not play, so it was possible that the disc was bad.
Plus there have been a few updates The most recent was

Upgraded the following packages:
cpp-4.1 (4.1.2-13ubuntu1) to 4.1.2-13ubuntu2
g++-4.1 (4.1.2-13ubuntu1) to 4.1.2-13ubuntu2
gcc-4.1 (4.1.2-13ubuntu1) to 4.1.2-13ubuntu2
gcc-4.1-base (4.1.2-13ubuntu1) to 4.1.2-13ubuntu2
libstdc++6-4.1-dev (4.1.2-13ubuntu1) to 4.1.2-13ubuntu2

Ever since those updates were installed or the xine pkg was installed,
this vlc problem has been fixed.
