Just wanted to say that after several failed attempts to get pulseaudio
to work properly (editing /etc/pulse/daemonconf, 2 ->6 channels, and
enable-lfe-remixing = yes), I was still being vexed. Keep in mind, this
is after a fresh install of mint, and after experiencing similar
problems in ubuntu. I was finally able to get my audio to work song
after song.

Uninstalled pulseaudio:
sudo apt-get autoremove pulseaudio

rebooted

installed alsamixer:
sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer

rebooted again (y'know... for good measure)

cranked up the volume:
gnome-alsamixer

Should note that I did lose my tray icon for the soundmixer, but eff it.
It worked.
