@johnlea: Please note that I do not want to change anything here regarding the Unity showdesktop behaviour, but as Sam said just prevent this bug from happening. Please also see bug 1063171.
Fact is that both Compiz plug-ins do not work/produce undefined behavior and bugs once activated in CCSM if Unity runs and this should and can easily be fixed.
