Totally an upstream issue:

So as a matter of fact the only reason there is an icon to begin with is
because of the debian-menu icons we have there (which really is not all
that relevant anymore seeing as above mentioned spec + the desktop entry
spec pretty much solve the same problem in a distro independent
fashion).

Solution: upstream needs to install at least a 48x48 icon to hicolor in
accordance with the specification recommendation.
