On second thought, I did get an Ubuntu crash report window automatically come up while using this kernel, but it wasn't a kernel panic like I was getting sometimes with the standard kernel, and it wasn't at boot. Still, it could be a different presentation of the same underlying bug, so I'll mention it here in case it's useful.
I sent the crash report, so I guess it's available somewhere to some Ubuntu developers, although I might not be able to find it if it was automatically marked as confidential. Looking at the crash report information before I sent it, I remember seeing the end of dmesg at the time, which I can now look up, and tell you that it was this: [ 705.275711] [drm] capturing error event; look for more information in /debug/dri/0/i915_error_state [ 705.277028] i915: render error detected, EIR: 0x00000010 [ 705.277031] i915: IPEIR: 0x00000000 [ 705.277033] i915: IPEHR: 0x00000000 [ 705.277034] i915: INSTDONE: 0xfffffffe [ 705.277036] i915: INSTPS: 0x0001e000 [ 705.277037] i915: INSTDONE1: 0xffffffff [ 705.277039] i915: ACTHD: 0x01a13cb0 [ 705.277041] i915: page table error [ 705.277042] i915: PGTBL_ER: 0x00000001 [ 705.277046] [drm:i915_report_and_clear_eir] *ERROR* EIR stuck: 0x00000010, masking [ 705.632027] atl1c 0000:02:00.0: vpd r/w failed.
