I have the same problem (on a Lenovo Thinkpad T430s).
I have tried with 3.6.0 upstream kernel.

franck@T430S:~$ uname -a
Linux T430S 3.6.0-030600-generic #201209302035 SMP Mon Oct 1 00:36:01 UTC 2012
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The problem is still here, that is nothing seems to happen when :
- inserting a card in the card reader
- or even pluging out the card reader itself from its PCIe

At least tail -f /var/log/syslog gives no output...

In fact, unplugging the card reader has an effect: revision number
changes.

With card reader inserted, lspci gives:

04:00.0 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller
(rev 04)

With card reader ejected, lspci gives:
04:00.0 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller (rev ff)

Maybe this is the standard behaviour ?
