Further to my last post... Firstly I attached a PS2 keyboard to get past
the desktop login/password, when the desktop session started the
wireless keyboard still wouldn't work. Secondly there was another USB
device plugged in (a sensor for a remote control that appears to the
system as a keyboard+mouse), I removed that and the wireless keyboard
resumed working, plugged it back in and the wireless keyboard has
continued to work ever since (including after reboots).
