To my mind this looks like a kernel bug that got only introduced in ubuntu.
Also I have the feeling that something is going wrong during the shutdown
process.
As noted before If I boot into a working upstream kernel, I am able to boot
into a »broken« ubuntu kernel.
But I am not able to boot from a »broken« ubuntu kernel into a »broken« ubuntu
kernel.
I hope it is clear what I am trying to say.
