This bug also affects me. I've tried installing virtual book versions 4.1.12, 4.1.18, 4.1.22, and 4.2. They have all caused a sudden system reboot wile installing or starting a VM. I've tried disabling 2d and 3d, not using usb, not using extensions or additions.
I am installing from amd64 host to x86 XP guest. I have finally got it to work. after Ubuntu Server upgrade to 12.10 from 12.04 i installed Virtualbox 4.1.18 with extentions and it crashed again. I was using the nvidaia-current driver. i changed to the open xorg driver and i have been able to install and run virtualbox VMs without it crashing. Seems to be a nvidia issue. I cant use the new desktop enviornment with the nvidia driver disabled.
