I have the same issue: fresh Ubuntu 12.10 install, tried fglrx, fglrx- updates and the AMD Catalyst 12.9 driver, directly from AMD. With the latter everything worked, besides Unity (compiz crashes). With the other two got graphics error and could not load lightdm.
