Christian Convey, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Regarding your comments https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1059655/comments/3 : >"I believe that's correct: the *current* version of fglrx doesn't support ATI >FirePro M7740 chip. Unfortunately, it's only the current version that's >compatible with the version of X that ships with Ubuntu 12.10."
Neither the available prior upstream driver releases notes from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/previous/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx , or the current stable/beta from http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalystSoftwareSuiteVersion129ReleaseNotes.aspx mention FirePro M7740. As well, if one goes to http://support.amd.com/US/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx and clicks -> Notebook Graphics -> Mobility FirePro Series -> Dell Precision M6500 (FirePro M7740 Mobility), one will notice under Operating System: how linux is not an option. However, if one chooses Notebook Graphics -> Radeon HD Series -> Radeon 6310 -> Operating System: notice Linux x86 is an option. Hence, it appears AMD currently does not, nor has ever provided a linux driver for your model line. Despite this, you are welcome to engage AMD about this through their official support channels via https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#Official_AMD_support_channels . It is advised to use their E-Mail webform ( http://emailcustomercare.amd.com/ ) as you will get a ticket number E-Mailed to you regarding your issue (I know, I recently submitted one). :) If you do submit a ticket, please share your results.
